Cosmetic surgery has three major benefits – increased self confidence, enhanced mental health and improved physical health. For example, rhinoplasty repairs deviated septums, and makes breathing easier. Breast reduction surgery relieves neck, back and shoulder pain. Liposuction reduces your chances of getting diabetes. And if you’re born with a rare facial deformity, like a twisted jaw that leaves you unable to chew food, a cosmetic procedure could even save your life.
However, plastic surgery is often abused. People decide they want to look like a celebrity – Kim Kardashian, Justin Bieber, a Human Ken Doll – and get way too many procedures, chasing their quixotic goal. They think they look attractive. Others think they look grotesque, and their pictures spread across the Internet, to mockery and derision. We cringe, we laugh, and we wonder, is this person really happy with their plastic surgery? If so, then that’s great. If not, then that’s sad.
Sahar Tabar is a 19-year-old Iranian woman who loves Angelina Jolie. There are a lot of reasons to love Angelina Jolie. She’s not just a talented actress, or that lady who married Brad Pitt; she’s a humanitarian. She advocates on behalf of refugees all over the world. She pushed for legislation to aid child immigrants. She gave an empowering speech on sexual abuse, as one of the first women to accuse Harvey Weinstein of harassment. Also, when she discovered she had an 87% chance of getting breast cancer, she got a mastectomy, and openly discussed the experience, (hopefully) inspiring more women to make healthy life choices.

However, Sahar idolizes Angelina Jolie so much she wants to look just like her. In her quest to achieve this goal, she’s not just cosplaying Jolie’s Lara Croft character from Tomb Raider. She’s reportedly undergone over 50 reconstructive surgeries and lost over 80 pounds. But would Angelina Jolie herself approve of these surgeries, considering her advocacy for women to make “healthy life choices?” It seems unlikely.
On the Internet, many people have compared Sahar’s new look to the Corpse Bride, the eponymous character from Tim Burton’s 2005 stop-motion musical fantasy film. If I were going to get cosmetic surgery, “a character from a Tim Burton film” would be the last thing I wanted to look like.
On Instagram, Sahar has less than 40 posts, but almost 300,000 followers, which is pretty impressive. Maybe she was just after fame, and going viral with photos of her shocking transformation brought her happiness. But I still have so many questions: How did she pay for these surgeries? Why didn’t any plastic surgeons refuse service, given her young age? Are these surgeries really real, and not some elaborate prank? Also, what did Sahar look like before all these surgeries?
Well, we have an answer to the last question, at least:
Oh, man. All right, well, you do you, girl. I hope cosmetic surgery made you happy.
