Couple throws wedding reception at KFC and it only costs $140

Weddings are expensive – unless you do it at one of those cheesy chapels in Las Vegas where the priest is an Elvis Presley impersonator. According to the latest estimates, the average wedding in the United States costs $26,720, although many couples do it for less $10,000. Still, that’s a lot of money. There’s the cost of the dress, the suit, the reception venue, the catering, the wedding planner, the invitations, the DJ, the photographer, the flowers and decorations – it all adds up to much more than you might think.

I get why some couples throw extravagant weddings. As true romantics, they want the day to feel special, a perfect memory that will last for the rest of their lives. But I also get why some couples throw modest weddings. Not everyone can afford to blow their bank account on one night. And even if you do have the money, is it really worth it? You could spend that money on something else, like a trip around the world, or one of those scary bionic sex robots. It’s not like you to spend a lot of money to create happy memories.

Well, one couple in Worchester, England threw an amazing wedding reception at the last venue you’d expect: KFC. After tying the knot at a ceremony at a town, Edward Simms, 48, and his wife, Cherish, 34, took everyone to the famous American fast food chain. Forget those snooty buffets – these guests gorged on bargain buckets of Kentucky fried chicken, biscuits, potato wedges, macaroni and cheese, coleslaw, green beans, whole kernel corn, cakes and cookies. They didn’t just want their special day to be perfect; they wanted it to be finger-lickin’ good.

According to The Bridal Association of America, the average cost of a wedding reception is $1,244. However, Edward and Cherish only spent £100, which translates to about $140 in American currency. And we have to translate it to American currency, because that is the only currency that matters. (By the way, England, you’ve got to stop using that stupid metric system. It doesn’t make any sense.) The couple says they picked KFC partially because of their budget, but mostly, they’re huge fans of Colonel Sanders’ restaurant.

“We thought it would be a bit of fun,” said Cherish. “We love eating chicken and chips and we probably order food from there around once a week…We got in touch with the manager, who thought it was a bit strange, but was willing to give it a go for us. We had more than enough to eat and they had really gone to town with the decoration, we didn’t even plan anything with them, but they really managed to make our day special. It was great value for money and we wanted to spend more money on our honeymoon instead…All our guests really enjoyed the day, instead of spending the day with people we didn’t like, with boring buffet food. We wanted everyone to be relaxed and share our day with us. I recommend it to everyone, why not have something a bit different?”

Congratulations to Edward and Cherish! If you’re planning your wedding, maybe you could consider your favorite fast food chain for the reception. It’s fun, and you’ve save a lot of money. Plus, you’re probably going to get divorced anyway.
